Creamy Garlic Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Bake

This creamy garlic ham and cheese puff pastry bake is the kind of recipe that feels comforting from the first bite. Flaky, golden pastry surrounds a rich filling made with melted cheeses, savory ham, tender vegetables, and a gentle garlic note that ties everything together. It is indulgent without feeling heavy and works just as well for a relaxed family dinner as it does for brunch or a casual gathering with friends.

The contrast between crisp puff pastry and the soft, creamy interior makes this dish especially satisfying. Served warm, the filling stays luscious and well-balanced, while the pastry keeps its delicate crunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed, about 250 g
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • ½ small cabbage, finely shredded, about 200 g
  • 1 medium carrot, grated
  • 100 ml vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
  • 3 tablespoons cream cheese
  • 100 ml heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 50 g feta cheese, crumbled
  • 100 g gouda cheese, shredded
  • 100 g ham, diced
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 egg yolk, for brushing

Instructions

Prepare the vegetables

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion and cook until fragrant and lightly golden.

Add the shredded cabbage and grated carrot. Stir well and cook for about 5 minutes until softened. Pour in the vegetable broth, season with salt and pepper, and cook until the liquid evaporates and the vegetables are tender.

Stir in the vinegar and sugar, cook for one more minute, then remove from heat. Let the mixture cool for 10 to 15 minutes.

Make the creamy filling

In a bowl, mix cream cheese, heavy cream, Parmesan, feta, and gouda until smooth. Add the diced ham, dried basil, and chopped parsley. Mix until evenly combined.

Assemble the pastry

Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Spread the creamy cheese and ham mixture evenly over the center, leaving space around the edges. Spoon the cooled cabbage and carrot mixture on top.

Fold the pastry edges over the filling like an envelope, sealing the seams well. Brush the top with egg yolk for a golden finish.

Bake

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bake the pastry for 25 to 30 minutes, until puffed and deeply golden. If desired, sprinkle extra cheese on top and return to the oven for another 10 minutes until melted.

Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Why This Recipe Works

The creamy cheese mixture keeps the filling rich and smooth, while the vegetables add balance and prevent it from feeling too heavy. Garlic and herbs bring depth without overpowering the dish. Puff pastry provides structure and texture, turning simple ingredients into a satisfying baked meal.

Storage Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the oven at 160°C for best texture. Avoid microwaving if possible, as it softens the pastry.

Variations

  • Replace ham with cooked chicken or turkey
  • Add mushrooms or spinach to the vegetable mixture
  • Use cheddar or emmental instead of gouda
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for extra warmth

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm with a simple green salad or sliced tomatoes dressed with olive oil. It also works well cut into smaller pieces as an appetizer or brunch option.

This creamy garlic ham and cheese puff pastry bake is proof that comfort food can feel elegant with very little effort. It is rich, satisfying, and easy to make, making it a reliable recipe to keep on hand for any occasion.
