Sweet Bread with a Buttery Cinnamon Sugar Topping

“My mom’s grandmother use to make these. Then when she passed away no one had the recipe, but I’ve been hearing about them my whole life.”

Some recipes live on through stories long before they are ever written down. This sweet bread is one of those. Soft, moist, and gently spiced with cinnamon, it is finished with a buttery cinnamon sugar topping that bakes into a lightly crisp crust. It is simple, comforting, and timeless, the kind of bread that feels just as right with a morning coffee as it does served warm for dessert.

This version captures the spirit of those remembered loaves, using straightforward ingredients and an easy method that delivers reliable results every time.

Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 45 to 55 minutes
Yield: 1 loaf (9×5-inch)

Ingredients

For the Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Prepare the Oven and Pan

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan, or line it with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides to make removal easier.

Make the Batter

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon until evenly combined.

In a separate bowl, whisk the melted butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Gently fold everything together using a spatula just until combined. The batter should be thick and slightly lumpy. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the bread dense.

Bake

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Add the Cinnamon Sugar Topping

About five minutes before the bread finishes baking, mix the sugar and cinnamon for the topping in a small bowl.

Once the bread is out of the oven, immediately brush the top evenly with the melted butter. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture generously over the buttered surface.

Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 to 20 minutes, allowing the topping to set into a lightly crisp layer. Then transfer the loaf to a wire rack to cool completely.

Baker’s Notes

  • Do not overmix: Stirring too much develops gluten and can result in a tough loaf. Mix only until the ingredients come together.
  • Buttermilk option: Using buttermilk instead of milk adds a subtle tang and creates a more tender crumb.
  • Check early: Ovens vary, so begin checking for doneness around 45 minutes. If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover it with foil.
  • Cooling matters: Letting the bread rest in the pan helps it set and makes slicing cleaner and easier.

This sweet bread with its buttery cinnamon sugar crust is more than just a recipe. It is a tribute to family memories, passed-down stories, and the comforting flavors that connect generations.
