Ren Dorr, captain of the commercial fishing boat Ryss & Stace, was around five miles off the coast of Maine with two other fishermen, when spotted the deer struggling to keep its head afloat. Obviously they were surprised with such a sight, but without a second thought, they jumped into action to save the deer. However, it proved to be a very tough rescue since the poor animal was confused and scared. But in the end, the fishermen managed to take it on board and save its life.

“We had to circle a few times to get a hold of him,” Jared Thaxter, one of the fishermen told ABC News. “We grabbed him by the spikes and maybe a leg or two and just dragged him in.”

Once they safely brought the drowning animal aboard, the crew headed on shore to release it back on land. “It was definitely worth the time and effort,” the crew said. “You can’t let anything suffer like that when you can easily help.”

Dorr has later shared a few photos of the dramatic rescue on Facebook and his post quickly went viral with numerous people showing gratitude to his selfless gesture. “Found this little guy 5 miles offshore today drifting farther away from land,” Dorr wrote. “Couldn’t let the poor guy suffer and drown so we brought him aboard and sailed him half hour to land and dropped him off on the beach! And sailed back out to haul!”
