The only island in the world forbidden to women was included in the UNESCO Heritage

On the island of Okinoshima is the famous Okitsu altar, built in the 17th century. Here, people prayed for the sailors to return home from the sea. Men who set foot on this island must undress and go through a purification ritual. And when they leave, they are not allowed to take souvenirs from the island or to reveal details of their visit here.

Long before the Okitsu altar was built, the island was the place where rituals were blessed by ships sharking goods with China or South Korea.
